My Blog: blog

I was an Atari ST fan back in the day. That means I had to hate the Amiga fans as a matter of course. I mean, it was like Mega Drive vs SNES in some ways. But computers were so much different in those days.

Aren't they beautiful in their own unique ways?

Now it's all Home Theatre PC this, and MacBook Pro that, but hardware just isn't as defining of a generation as it was before. Homogenisation of hardware stops computers from being that much different from each other; I mean, everyone knows a Mac is just a PC with OS X installed, right?

Anyway, I just made this thread so I could show off this cool demo of 3D on an Atari ST I found years ago, and let people talk about what computers they had before computers stopped being so nerdy and protracted. Any old people out there whose first computer wasn't a SNES?

Hmm, the first computer that I really got to play with was a Macintosh SE, I think. I played this game called Dark Castle on it, which was damned hard. Kind of hilarious to watch now though.

I also have a PowerBook 100 which I played Shufflepuck Café on. Still have it in my closet but I think the charger is broken.

My first computer was a generic beige box, with a 550Mhz AMD K6-2, 192MB RAM, and a 10GB(or 20) HDD. Whatever graphics card on it wasn't able to handle any level of 3D.

Every retro computer thread needs a Spectrum! A great looking machine with some classic games.

I missed out on all of these but I remain absolutely impressed with the sounds of the C64's SID chip. That thing is awesome, can only imagine how sexy it must've been back in the day. can't get enough of that trilly sound even today. the best game music was composed during this period too; lookin' straight @ you, Follin bros.

ETA: CHRIS HUELSBECK too, how could I forget

If i ever do get a micro computer i will start with an ST or Amiga, I'm not sure if getting a speccy, C64 or amstrad CPC464 would be worth it in this day and age.

Also here is a video of Quake running on an amiga1200:

If you found that impressive then here is Quake II on an amiga1200:
